When it comes to decorating for the holidays there is really no style to uphold but your own. Unless you want to buy new decorations to match the trends each year. You can go with a minimalistic approach if you travel or have small, close family gatherings all the way up to Designer Styles for folks that love to throw holiday parties, events, or have big families to entertain.

#1 Fast and Easy: Greenery is where to start!

This is the easiest and best place to start with your holiday decorating from Thanksgiving and transitioning to Christmas. If you are fortunate enough to have evergreens in your yard it can be as simple as a walk outside. If not, there are plenty of places to get greenery already made into garlands, wreaths, or bundles for your decorating needs. From your neighborhood garden center to Home Depot.

You can place a simple evergreen wreath, or garland on or over your front door, your mantle, hang it going up the stairway by itself or with some festive ribbon. For Thanksgiving add some dried flowers or branches and fruit or pine ones for more of a “fall” look then transition into the Christmas season by just changing the ribbon and adding battery-powered twinkle lights, ornaments, or festive winter foliage like Holly, or gold painted magnolia leaves.

#2 Tablescapes

Tablescapes for Thanksgiving dinner can be set ahead of time for seasonal decor or just before your guests and family arrive. If you are having a simple family gathering place some of your greenery on top of a protective runner for your table (I wouldn’t suggest a runner alone and if you do use one for the protection of your wooden table it should be covered with decoration) Add a bunch of different sized and colored pumpkins and gourds, add your dried greenery, flowers, and fruit to the mix for a centerpiece that runs the length of the table. Pull your best dishes out, silverware, and crystal for a formal look. I Love toile China patterns of any color to mix in with what you already have, even if it’s just a dessert plate or a centerpiece bowl if you choose to go that route rather than the whole length of the table. Serve your dinner buffet or plated style so there is plenty of room for everything beautiful.

#3 Around the house

Simple decorations as easy as a throw pillow on a sofa or your favorite chair will bring a touch of festive fun. Coffee tables are great places to do a little holiday vignette with a little greenery and some pine cones to be switched out for ornaments and Holly, etc. for Christmas. Kitchen decor, consoles, tables, bars, and shelves are great places to throw in in little or a lot of holiday cheer! For a big splash use those mantles and stair railings. Even the mantles in your kitchen if you happen to have that style vent hood surround over your oven. Here is an awesome arrangement by regram@carolfrominteriors over a kitchen mantle combining a fabulous toile platter, some pumpkins, gourds, and pine cones along with Pheasant Feathers, dried sunflowers, and antler decor giving a wink to “hunting season” here in the south.

#4 Staying on Trend

If you are a trend follower and like to change things up every year or you entertain a lot and don’t want the same decorations to be put back in storage every year you might want to team up with a designer or a shop that has holiday decor in trade for advertising their style or products. Especially for big events. Or if you have the budget to do so you can donate last year’s decor for the trends of this year and years following. The holiday color trends I’ve seen span the color spectrum from

  • Deep Blues, Browns, Persimmons, Cream, Antique Gold to
  • Earthy Pinks and peaches with off white, and accents in silver
  • As always the traditional reds and greens with the reds leaning towards Garnet Red and the greens toward Emerald Green

Along with the Top Holiday Decorating Trends For 2023, According to @SouthernLivingMagazine

  • Incorporating Natural Wonders.
  • Committing To The Classics.
  • Toying With A Not-So-Traditional Color Scheme.
  • Adding Merry Flair To Surprising Places.
  • Highlighting Retro Finds.
  • Layering In A Festive Fragrance.
  • Outfitting Guest Rooms With Christmas Spirit.

#5 Switch it up, just a little every year

Whether your style is traditional or contemporary, minimalist or maximalist, on-trend, or traditional every year, you can’t go wrong implementing some of the trends. So switch it up, even if it’s just a little.

Final Holiday Decorating Designer Tip: Avoid blow-up yard decorations at all costs!
